ACRS is launching Walk for Rice online this year instead of hosting the event at Seward Park, to ensure everyone’s safety during the global pandemic health crisis. While the event location has changed, our commitment to this growing need is stronger than ever.
The ACRS food bank provides culturally familiar foods to immigrants, refugees, elders and families throughout King County. Without culturally competent food delivery, AAPI community members face a disproportionate lack of access to food, emergency meals, and other basic needs. In response to COVID-19, we quickly shifted food bank operations from walk-in distribution to home deliveries, providing emergency food in the safest way possible. With help from community partners and volunteers, we are currently delivering 1,200 bags of groceries and 1,300 culturally familiar meals weekly to seniors and those in need, and the demand is growing.
Thirty years ago, Herb and Bertha Tsuchiya and Sam Mitsui started the Walk for Rice tradition with a bold mission of raising awareness of hunger in Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. What began as a small group of 45 community members has grown into an annual tradition that inspired generations of giving, and brings food to thousands in need across our region. We celebrate the 30th anniversary of Walk For Rice by remembering our founders, and honoring their legacy by continuing to fundraise for AAPIs facing hunger.
More than ever, every grain counts. Together, we can ensure members of our communities find support and food when they need it most. Please make a gift today and consider creating a virtual Walk for Rice team to fundraise to fight hunger.
We need your participation this year more than ever!
